Stash Busting

I wanted to share this with you. Originally I had wanted to have a go at using elastic thread to do some shirring.... but I chickened out. Instead of endeavouring with the elastic thread I took a little inspiration from my increasing love of country music and all things Taylor Swift/Carrie Underwood and made a urban cowgirl tiered skirt - and I didn't use a pattern! Maybe I'm the only person that associates tiered skirts with cowgirls but either way it was pretty easy to make!

By the way, for the life of me I can't successfully get that tension gathering thingy to work on my sewing machine - maybe its my machine but more likely the problem lies with the me. Instead of beautifully easy gathers I'm left with a tonne of unpicking and an uneven amount of gathers on one side of the skirt. The best lesson from all of this that I learnt, besides the importance of a good quality unpicker and some daytime TV re-runs is; pre-wash your fabric! I swear this skirt fit around my hips when I was making it, now it has to stretch to fit my waist. I'm pretty sure I haven't put on any weight so it must have shrunk. Personally I think it looks better as a high-waisted skirt so perhaps it was all part of a subconscious plan to make me more fashionable!

The fabric is also pretty cool - it kind of looks like something designer but it's just from my local fabric store and if I remember right it was $2/m over a year ago. So this project was another stash busting project!

If anyone reading this has any ideas about the tension gathering or elastic thread, I'd love to hear about it. Leave me a comment or two - it would be much appreciated!

Thanks for letting me share,
